Maternity hospitals
Choosing a hospital is possibly the first thing most women do as soon as the home pregnancy test shows a positive result. If you have lived in Shanghai for a few years you now probably have a good idea of which hospital is the one for you, if you are new it might be a good idea to make appointments for tours in all the hospitals before you make your decision.
Remember that the most important thing is for you to feel comfortable and safe in your hospital of choice.

Hi Bettina – thanks for this great blog. I think it is very helpful!!! I am the first time pregnant and my husband and I are moving to Shanghai in Feb 09. I am planning to give birth in Shanghai and I would like your advice on good hospitals. I have seen your list from 5 Feb 2007. I wonder if something has changed since then? I have read about the Parkway Hospital… I am 38 years old. Although I am fit and healthy I thought I should probably go to a hospital which has experience with complicated pregnancies (just in case). Thanks very much! Christine
Hi Christine,
Congratulations on your pregnancy. Thanks for reminding me to update this section! What I list as World Link is now called Parkways Health, I will edit this section right away. You might also want to check out Shanghai United Family hospital, the super midwife MK is really experienced and everyone loves her ; ) Good luck with your move, look forward to having you in Shanghai !
[...] with friends which hospitals had good reputations, the answer came clear and sharp… 1st position: United Family, followed closely by World Link, and finally came Huashan Hospital in Urumuqi [...]
Hi Bettina
Your site is great. I’ll be back for more.
I’ve just found out that I’m preggers and am looking at hospitals right now. I was wondering if women who’ve already had babies reading this know what the chances of an emergency C-section are…the hospitals all told me that it’s anything between 20000 – 40000Y more!! That’s a huge addition to my insurance and I don’t want to spring any surprises on them in case I end up footing the bill!!
Thanks!!
