Mothercare opens in Shanghai!

know it’s not cool and a little embarrassing but yes I have to admit that I was a little too excited when I saw that Mothercare was opening a shop on Huaihai lu a few months ago. Mothercare has in fact started a joint venture with Goodbaby who already manufactures many of the nursery products sold through Mothercare world wide and is opening 2 stores in Shanghai and another in Beijing. Anyhow the Huaihai branch is now open, just by the intersection of Ruijing lu and I went to check it out with a couple of friends last week. We weren’t all that impressed to be honest, especially with the fact that they don’t even have a ramp!! It felt quite expensive especially since we were coming straight from Puan lu and it isn’t as big as I expected. That said it is really handy and does have things that aren’t available in other places, such as splash mats, maternity bras, on the go potty, nice muslins, and environmentally friendlier (not sure how) disposable nappies, washable swimming nappies, stroller, stroller bags, maternity clothes, and a lot more I can’t remember. I think it surely will make life easier to mamas to be and mamas in town.

Next Age Mall

The 8th Floor of the Next Age Mall in Pudong has the largest selection of baby goods I’ve so far seen in town. The whole floor is dedicated to kids, lots and lots of toys, clothes, strollers, and the usual baby supplies.
Toys brands available here are: Lamaze (I love these toys), K’s Kids, Fisher-Price, Tolo, Play Skool and many others.
Pushchair brands: Goodbaby, Aprica, Combi, Inglesina, Angel, Esprit. They seem to have quite a few models of each especially Aprica, combi and Goodbaby.
There is a big display of Avent and Nuk breastfeeding products as well as the usual selection of baby things.
So overall similar to other baby shops in town but way bigger and with a wider selection.

ISetan-Nanjing Road

The Japanese store Isetan is also a useful place to pick up a few things, although prices are not low. They have imported clothes (not cheap!!) and toys as well as selection of pushchairs (Quinny, Inglesina, Combi, Aprica), cots, baby carrier (I saw one), feeding bottles etch… The staff was very patient demostrating how to open and close several pushchairs I am vaguely interested in and the shopping environment is clean and not crowded. Nice place although there wasn’t anything in particular I can recommend it for. Worth having a look if you are looking for something specific you haven’t found in the other big malls.
ISetan is located on Nanjing West road, by Jiangning Road in the Meilongzhen Mall.

Jiuguang City Plaza

The designer shopping mall next door to Jingan Temple not only has a great supermarket in the basement, Freshmart, where you can get the best bread sticks from Yamazaki and nice organic veggie, it also has a nice little section for mamas and mamas-to-be on the 6th floor.
There are some designer baby shops like the French Jacadi, which along the side of very cute but overpriced clothes stocks Baby Bjorns (1700+rmb) and Peg Perego Pramette (7000+rmb); Hallmark, KingKow…
In the corner there is a spread of different brands.
I found a goodish selection of baby carriers: Combi (0+) at 699rmb, Chicco (0-3.5kg) at 788rmb, Aprica (0-30 months) at 498rmb or (4+) at 328 rmb. One surprise find was a cotton baby sling which I hadn’t seen previously in town, the brand is called Mamaway and the sling is very colourful and cheap (278rmb) and comes with a dvd with instructions.
They also have a couple of brands of washable diapers which looked a big flimsy but were very cheap.
For pushchairs the selection feautures Chicco, Aprica, Combi, McLaren, Graco pretty much the same as any other big mall.
The stock of Lamaze toys will most definitely have me going back as they seem really fun and colourful.
Dr.Brown’s bottle and feeding products are here in a good selection, as well as WELEDA, PIGEON and Nacnac.
Shopping here is rather relaxing as there is hardly anyone around and the stuff were really helpful, let me open baby carriers and try them on and seemed pretty knowledgable on the products they stock.
