If you want to get creative and do something arty with your little ones there is now a new art school tucked away at the end of an alley just off Fuxing lu. The school has a nice homey vibe, good prices and lots of interesting creative projects. Here is a little more info I got from Becky who runs the school….

This is a pretty cool store, it’s expensive but has some things that you can’t get in other shops around town: a nice selection of birthday cards and wrapping paper, bits for baby proofing the house, music and art supplies, lots of fun toys (including wooden toys and manhattan toy company) and a smallish selection of books. Don’t have the exact address but it’s next door to Simply Thai in the North block of Xintiandi.
Recently found out about this from a friend and I was a little annoyed at myself for not having known about it before. It’s a really great place for crawling and walking babies and older kids, really clean and has lots of fun things like a balloon pen, a maze, a mary go around with fluffy animals, a ball pitt, a water mattress, and a few other crazy things. It’s a chain and they have several branches across town. Here is the website with the list of locations (only in Chinese).
I go to the Huaihai lu Isetan one (5th Floor) which is just round the corner from us.
The cost is 30rmb per time or a 100rmb card valid one year which allows you to go 5 times. The idea of taking Theo to play in a shopping mall makes me a bit sad and is one of the reasons why I’m looking at leaving Shanghai in the near future but it’s a good option for the winter and when you are bored of the house.
This is a great class that many probably know and enjoy already. Theo, Phil and I took part in the Xmas one off class and had a really good time singing Xmas songs and meeting Santa who gave the kids presents (Theo got a really cool bee rattle/maracas).
The teacher, Michelle, is really nice and gives the class a lot of structure, different songs come with different instruments for the babies to play along with and other fun stuff to keep the little ones amused.
The classes normally operate as 8-week unites based around a theme, I’d really love to join but it’s a bit far away from where we live so I’m hoping the teacher will start a downtown class in the near future.
The classes are divided in 3 age groups: Fun Time Baby (4-18 months), Fun Time Toddler (16 months-3 years), Fun Time Family (4 months-3 years) this one is on saturdays..
Anyways here are details if you are interested in getting in touch to find out more:

The Julia Gabriel Centre for Learning is a new school which recently set up in Shanghai. The motto of the school is “Express your best self”.
The school accepts babies from 6 months of age.
There are different programs offered including PLAYNEST, PLAYBCLUB (for older kids), EDUDRAMA, BOOKROOM. All programmes are available in Mandarin and some are especially created for children who do not have a Mandarin speaking environment at home.
Check their website for more details on courses and teaching methods.
I attended a talk given by the owner of the school at Bumps and Babes recently and got a very good impression on the school and the teachers, open hearted and nurturing; they also seem to have a lot of experience with multi lingual children.
